What Keeps Scouts in Scouting?

Dear Scouts,

Tonight, I want to talk to you about something that lies at the heart of our scouting experience: the incredible power of connection. We recently came across a national survey that revealed the number one reason why kids like you continue to be a part of scouting. Can you guess what it is? It's the feeling of being part of something larger than yourselves.

Reflecting on this, it reminded me of a vivid memory from my own scouting days. Picture this: It was the year 1998, and I found myself walking into the grand auditorium at Indiana State University for the NOAC (National Order of the Arrow Conference). As I stepped inside, I was enveloped by a sea of more than 7,000 fellow arrowmen, all wearing their uniforms and proudly displaying their OA sashes. In that moment, it felt like 700,000 individuals united by a common purpose.

I cannot adequately express the overwhelming sense of pride I felt to be a small part of that enormous movement. It was a powerful reminder of how we, as scouts, are connected to something greater than ourselves. It made me ponder a question that I want to share with you today: Are you feeling that same connection?

Scouting offers us countless opportunities to be part of something larger than our patrol, den, pack, or troop. It extends beyond the boundaries of our district and council. In fact, scouting is a global movement that transcends borders, cultures, and backgrounds. When we embrace this perspective, we unlock the full potential of our scouting experience.

Being connected to something larger means realizing that every action we take, every skill we learn, and every act of service we perform has a ripple effect. Our contributions, however small they may seem, become part of a much grander tapestry woven by scouts all over the world. We are part of a legacy, and the impact we make today shapes the future of scouting for generations to come.

So, I encourage each and every one of you to take a moment to reflect on your scouting journey. Consider the ways in which you are connected to something larger than yourselves. How have you experienced that sense of unity and purpose? And how can you continue to cultivate and deepen that connection?

Remember, the strength of our scouting family lies in our collective spirit. By standing together, supporting one another, and embracing the ideals that scouting represents, we can create a powerful force for positive change in our communities and beyond.
As we go forth from here, let us never forget the profound impact that being part of something larger than ourselves can have on our lives. Cherish the memories you've made, seek new opportunities to contribute, and inspire others to discover the transformative power of scouting.

Thank you for being part of this incredible journey together.
